Kort Thrusters
Kort Service
The Kort thruster range has evolved in response to customer demand.
Our reputation is for provision of impartial advice and effective propulsion packages which have grown to include our range of tunnelthrusters and small azimuthing propulsion units.
These are designed for hydraulic drive up to a maximum of 300 input power. Where larger units are required Kort can call on the expertise of HRP Thruster Systems b.v. whose thruster range now covers units up to 2500 kW.
Kort Range
Models KT30-KT170 have the hydraulic motor fitted in the drive housing directly coupled to the propeller shaft and nose cone assembly. These are pre fitted and tested prior to delivery.
Models KT150-200-250 have a lower gearbox within the tunnel with the hydraulic motor plugged into the input housing inside the vessel. These larger units can also have diesel drive via a cardan shaft and right angle gearbox. A range of ratios is available to suit engine rating.
All models can be supplied to suit either 210 or 280 bar system pressure and can be integrated with either closed loop or open loop hydraulic systems.

Materials
Kort thrusters are designed for the commercial displacement vessel however they have been successfully fitted to planing craft and inland waterways pleasure craft.
Long service life and ease of maintenance have been key factors in design and development of Kort thrusters.
Tunnels are supplied in standard lengths in mild steel, aluminum or grp with stainless steel ring in way of the propeller.
Wheelhouse controls
Kort has a range of panels to suit method of drive. In most cases we supply a joystick operated proportional control unit for hydraulic drive. This is a put and stay unit which can be integrated with an autopilot if required. Single or multi-station systems can be supplied.
Installation and Maintenance
All units are supplied with a comprehensive instruction manual. Experience working with shipbuilders and repairers has been a central factor in the design of Kort Thrusters resulting in lower installation costs and more reliable commissioning which can normally be carried out unsupervised.

Kort Steerable Thruster Units
The KORT KT200 steerable thruster was developed using the tunnelthruster lower gearbox and has a maximum rating of 200 bhp. The unit can be driven directly by hydraulic motor or by diesel via a cardan shaft and right angle gearbox. This configuration can also be offered for electric drive where required.
With either power supply, there is the option of open propeller or Kort Nozzle where higher thrust is required. The units and propellers can be custom designed to suit a given vessel.
Several applications have been supplied to date. The first was a twin screw workboat with 2 x 200 bhp Cummins diesel drive, another, a single screw inland river craft and a recent dredger shows the flexibility of the Kort package.
For this 13m vessel, Kort supplied the Doosan Daewoo engine package with baseframe, together with hydraulic drive package through Hercules Hydraulics.
Our KT200 thruster unit was installed in a cofferdam at the stern and was pre-piped and tested prior to delivery to the shipyard.
This provided a relatively simple solution for installation and on-going maintenance.
The Thameswey was built by Richards Drydock & Engineering for the Environmental Agency and has been in service since June 2006.
Kort are looking at several applications for small single screw vessels with KT200 steerable propulsion units, in particular some fish farm workboats and small harbour workboats.
