NEW TUG BOOSTS GREAT SUCCESS FOR KORT NOZZLES
The New 16M Tug for John McLoughlin & Son (Shipping) Ltd, Northern Ireland the Sally McLoughlin.
Measuring 16.00m x 6.20m, the hull and wheelhouse are of steel construction with a transom stern, raked soft nose stem and a centre skeg aft. The flexible mounted main engines are a pair of Weka Boxcooled Doosan 4V222TIH marine diesels, each developing 800hp at 1800 rev/min.
These turn four bladed 1700mm diameter propellers in fixed nozzles, supplied by Kort Propulsion, via free standing Twin Disc MGX5222 gearboxes.
This has a reduction ratio of 6.10:1 and is fitted with clutched PTO units for driving hydraulic pumps. Flexible couplings have been manufactured by Centa Transmissions.
In official trials the vessel surpassed all expectations and achieved a bollard pull ahead of 23 tonnes (average) and astern of 18 tonnes.
The free running speed was an average of 10.3 knots in offshore conditions. Plough dredging trials were also successfully carried out highlighting the versatility of the vessel.
All the cooling systems were supplied by Fernstrrum from USA through Kort Propulsion who also manufactured a hydraulic-driven transverse bow thruster unit. KT30 Thruster was used.

She is seen carrying out her very first towing contract. She towed the visiting Canadian frigate - HMCS Montreal (7000 grt) - in and out of Belfast Harbour during a courtesy call.

KORT BREAK INTO INDIAN MARKET
12x KT300AZ UNITS FOR IWAI
Kort Propulsion has completed an order from an Indian Shipyard, HOOGHLY DOCK & PORT ENGINEERS on behalf of Inland Indian Waterways Authority . Six new workboats will be built each with 2x KT300AZ units.
Kort are supplying 12x KT300AZ Azimuthing Units for The Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) who were established in 1986 for the development and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and navigation.
The Authority primarily undertakes projects for the development and maintenance of IWT Infrastructure on national waterways through grants received from The Ministry of Shipping.
Kort have been in contact at the design stage offering advice on the powering of the vessel in respect of performance in vessel propulsion. This typically consists of vessel resistance estimates, free running predictions, bollard pull predictions.
Kort can also offer further estimates on vessel performance, i.e. thrust figures and rpm figures, across the speed range. Once all the variables are decided upon, they would then work closely with the shipyard and owners.
Kort steerable propeller propulsion unit the KT300AZ will be powered by Greaves Cotton Indian engine developing 275Hp @1800rpm, with a 3:1 Gearbox . It comprises of a water cooled marine diesel engine driving a fixed blade propeller through an overcentre clutch, torsional vibration coupling, cardan shafts.
It should be emphasised that the design of the complete system is based on established components, proven to provide long life and reliability, with low maintenance requirements. The design has been proven over a long History of supply to many customers in many diverse environments, worldwide, many of which involve adverse conditions demanding the best quality equipment.
12 units have now been delivered. This is an exciting order for Kort Propulsion Co Ltd and a step into the Indian market where extreme growth will take place in the coming years.

KORT XL NOZZLE SYSTEM
Since 1969 Kort have been involved in the design and supply of nozzles. Since the first Kort nozzle was used on a vessel on the Rhine the nozzle design has evolved to reduce resistance and manufacturing costs and simplify installation. Research at Marin over the years has provided data to back up theoretical results.
Kort are confident in their predictions and have built up close relationships with customers when specifying requirements for new vessels.
Over 20 yrs ago Kort formed a company in Canada trading successfully in the fishing industry. Kort were offered a license for an improved performance nozzle section which was not taken up. After evaluation Kort concluded there was little to be gained from this profile compared to others offered by Kort.
Vessel performance to match Owners requirements is a combination of nozzle and propeller design not either of these alone.
Kort have introduced the Kort XL System to meet customers requests for an alternative to the HR System and others. This design incorporates 40yrs experience PLUS results from an EU funded research program involving UNEWC and Universities in Spain and Italy.
The Kort XL System has many innovations and design refinements which give improved nozzle thrust. Results from the EU study and full scale tests have proved the benefits of the system.
The improved efficiency of the Kort XL System is a positive benefit for fishing vessels. Several units are already in service and others are on order.
With the Kort Nozzle System an owner can work his existing fishing gear using less engine power than is needed with an open propeller, resulting in reduced fuel consumption. Fuel savings of 12-20% have been reported by skippers.
Kort personnel are committed to the fishing industry. They understand fishing methods and owner requirements and are therefore the obvious choice for advice on performance and powering of new and existing vessels.
